Skills turn what you already do into permanent stats: there are 7 of them, each goes up to level 50, and every level adds a bonus and pays coins.
Level 50 is the cap
Level 50 is the highest level of every skill. It gives the skill's Master title and its level 50 bonus.

Bosses pay Combat XP as a share of the XP your current Combat level still needs: 3% for the Wither and 6% for the Ender Dragon. You need at least 10% of the damage, and each boss pays this once every 600 seconds.Your minions earn skill XP too: 5% of what the same output would give you, at most 250 XP per skill per hour. It is banked on the minion and credited when you collect.
Levels
The first level needs 100 XP in Mining, 75 in Farming, 65 in Combat, 60 in Foraging, 15 in Fishing, 10 in Crafting and 1 in Excavation. Every later level needs more XP than the one before. All skills follow the same curve at a different scale, so a Fishing level takes about 15% of the XP of the same Mining level.

Excavation luck and the crafting discount each stop at 20%. The Master titles are Master Miner, Master Farmer, Master Slayer, Master Forager, Master Angler, Master Excavator and Master Artisan.
Rewards
Every level-up pays 100 coins times the level you reach: level 10 pays 1,000 coins, level 50 pays 5,000 coins. Some levels pay a milestone reward on top, in every skill:

Do my minions level my skills?
Yes, slowly. Minions earn 5% of the skill XP their output would give you, up to 250 XP per skill per hour, credited when you collect.
Which skills level fastest?
Excavation and Crafting need the least XP per level, followed by Fishing.
Why did a boss give me no Combat XP?
You dealt less than 10% of the damage, or the same boss already paid you within the last 600 seconds.
Fishing, Excavation and Combat levels unlock some Powers for your Accessories, Crafting XP comes from the workbench, and Excavation XP from brushing caches for relics.
